Know Your Librarian: Katie

|

Katie is a familiar smiling face at the Hollis Social Library but due to COVID-19 we’re just now sitting down to get to know her better! Katie is our cataloger which means she processes all items as they come into the library.

Hi Katie! We have to admit we’re all a little jealous that you get to see every item that arrives at the library. And we can’t wait to learn a bit more about you! We’ve got some questions ready so let’s dive right in. First, we have to ask, what’s your favorite genre of book or movie?

The books and movies I enjoy are pretty eclectic- I can appreciate just about anything with a really great story! I usually lean toward historical fiction, mystery, and the occasional rom-com. I also read quite a bit of nonfiction on a variety of topics ranging from health and wellness, travel, and history to gardening, cooking, and crafting.

What hobby would you get into if time and money weren’t an issue?

I would definitely love to travel more! I enjoy exploring and experiencing new places and cultures. I’m also really interested in photography, it would be fun to combine the two!

What are you interested in that most people haven’t heard of?

Music Therapy. I have always had a passion for music! I studied Music Therapy in college (minoring in flute performance) and am actually a board certified Music Practitioner. Music Therapy is the use of music as part of a therapeutic process to address physical, emotional, spiritual, developmental, behavioral and social needs. I find the effects of sound, music, and vibration on the mind and body fascinating!

What form of public transportation do you prefer? (air, boat, train, bus, car, etc.)

I love road trips and often go on long car rides with my husband and kids. I’m hoping to plan a cross country adventure for our family soon!

Would you rather go hang gliding or whitewater rafting?

I think I would be willing to try either. Parasailing also sounds fun, and I’ve always wanted to take a hot air balloon ride!

Where is the most interesting place you’ve been?

The Burren in Ireland. The landscape is so unique, beautiful and surreal!

What fictional place would you most like to go?

I would love to visit Pemberley, Mr. Darcy’s estate in Pride and Prejudice, and take in the natural beauty of the English countryside.

What pets did you have while you were growing up?

We had a lot of pets growing up. Cats, dogs, a bunny. We raised chickens and even had a pony named Friar Tuck!

What book impacted you the most?

It’s hard to choose, so many books have impacted me over the years! Little Women and Pollyanna are two classics that come to mind. They nurtured my love of reading as a child and have really stayed with me. The importance of family bonds, determination, faith and optimism are themes that still resonate as I read these books to my children now. They remain relevant and timeless to me years later!

Are you an introvert or an extrovert?

I am definitely an introvert, but really enjoy spending time with people!
