Know Your Librarian: Kara

|

This is the first of our “Know Your Librarian” posts. We’re excited to learn new things about our coworkers and we’re starting with our newest employee! Fresh to the team in 2019, Kara is our new Youth Services Librarian.

Greetings Kara! Welcome to the Hollis Social Library. We’d love to get to know a bit more about you. So let’s get started. First, we have to ask, what’s your favorite genre of book or movie?

I love to read biographies and romantic drama.  My favorite movies are romantic comedies.

What hobby would you get into if time and money weren’t an issue?

I love quilting. I currently do a lot of sewing but I have to be careful because buying fabric can get very expensive. I only purchase fabric for a particular quilt that I am making. If money wasn’t an issue, I would buy all the fabric I like regardless of whether I had a project in mind for it.

What are you interested in that most people haven’t heard of?

I am very interested in Forensic Genealogy. I took a class at Boston University that taught us how to track down a person’s genealogy based on their DNA testing results. This helps people who are adopted to find family members. This is also being used to identify many of the unknown soldiers who died during WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam. Identification allows them to be reunited with family for a proper burial.

What form of public transportation do you prefer? (air, boat, train, bus, car, etc.)

I prefer traveling by airplane. An airplane will take me all over the world so I can explore and learn about other countries and cultures. Once I arrive at my destination, I will need a car in order to explore.

Would you rather go hang gliding or whitewater rafting?

I would love to go whitewater rafting.

Where is the most interesting place you’ve been?

I went shark diving in Hawaii. It was incredible to be in the water with sharks that ranged in size from five feet to fifteen feet. Don’t worry! We were in a cage to protect us from the sharks.

What fictional place would you most like to go?

I would go to the Hundred Acre Wood and hang out with Winnie-the-Pooh, Eeyore, Rabbit, Piglet, Tigger, Roo, and Kanga. It would be a lot of fun!

What pets did you have while you were growing up?

I have had dogs and cats. I had a Dalmatian when I was little that my brother and I named Mr. Dot.  I currently have one dog whose name is Cheyenne.

What book impacted you the most?

Thunder Dog by Michael Hingson and Susy Flory. This is a true story about a blind man and his guide dog who were on the 78th floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. This story was full of trust and determination.

Are you an introvert or an extrovert?

I would consider myself both an introvert and extrovert. I love staying at home sewing and relaxing, but I also love to go out and meet people.

Wow! Thank-you Kara. It was wonderful chatting with you and we look forward to having you on our staff!
